Core Editor Improvements:
If you use WordPress’ block editor, you’ll find a lot of helpful improvements geared toward making writing easier. From new keyboard shortcuts to a more cohesive toolbar, the block editor will be easier to use.
Improvements to the Command Palette and Filter Patterns:
The command palette has a refreshed design in WordPress 6.4 to make it easier to use. And filter patterns now allow you to categorize them so you can locate what you need faster.
Lightbox Functionality for Images:
You can now easily have images pop up in a lightbox. In the past, you needed to use a different builder or a plug-in to have this functionality. Now, it’s in the block editor.
Bug & Security Fixes & Other Upgrades:
As in every WordPress release, version 6.4 includes numerous fixes and updates. Here’s a snapshot:
- Over 100 performance-related updates to improve the load speed.
- 303 tickets related to bugs and/or security were fixed.
Should you Upgrade?
We recommend keeping your WordPress version current if possible. However, sites that require high uptime, have older plug-ins/custom code, or don’t have a backup mechanism should test on a staging site before deploying to the live site. This is a major release, so there could be an impact to your site or its plug-ins, especially if you use the block editor. We also anticipate a maintenance release within a week or two, so you may want to wait for that.
As always, if you’d like us to take a look at your site before you upgrade to determine its readiness, feel free to schedule a free consultation with us. We’d be happy to point you in the right direction.
