With AI making news in recent months, it’s become a double-edged sword. Some use it as a shortcut to create content while others (especially students) let it do all of the work. It has definitely impacted the integrity of many people and businesses as they pass off AI work as their own. We’ve had mixed results with it as we’ve been both pleasantly surprised by some of its suggestions, but have also found it to provide information that was incorrect. So we came up with a fun idea for an experiment: ask ChatGPT how to tell if an article was written by AI. Below and between the lines is the unedited response (we didn’t even correct the grammar):

As AI technology continues to advance, it’s becoming increasingly challenging to determine whether an article was written by a human or an AI. However, here are a few indicators that might suggest an article was generated by AI:

Consistent Structure: AI-generated articles often have a consistent structure throughout the piece. They may follow a predictable pattern in terms of paragraph length, sentence structure, or the organization of information.

Lack of Personal Voice: AI-generated content may lack a personal touch or distinct voice that human writers often bring to their work. The tone may be generic, and the article might not reflect personal opinions, emotions, or subjective experiences.

Unusual Phrasings or Errors: AI-generated articles can occasionally contain unusual phrasings, grammatical errors, or awkward sentence structures that may indicate a lack of natural language fluency. While AI models have improved significantly, they may still produce the occasional odd sentence construction.

Inconsistent or Inaccurate Information: AI models rely on the data they were trained on, so they may generate content that is inconsistent or contains factual inaccuracies. This can happen if the training data includes conflicting information or if the AI does not have access to the latest information.

Lack of Contextual Understanding: AI models may struggle with understanding context and nuance, leading to the generation of content that may not fully capture the complexity or depth of a topic. Human writers often bring contextual understanding and the ability to draw upon personal experiences or insights.

It’s important to note that AI models are constantly improving, and there are sophisticated AI language models that can produce highly convincing and coherent content. Therefore, it may be increasingly challenging to rely solely on these indicators to determine if an article was written by AI.

To ascertain the authorship of an article, it may be necessary to conduct a deeper analysis by considering factors such as the source of the article, the writing style, the reputation of the publication, and any additional information about the author or content creation process provided by the platform publishing the article.
