Why Strong Passwords Matter

The chart below shows how long it would take a hacker to try every possible combination based on the length of the password and the types of characters used.

Chart that shows how long it would take for someone to crack a password.

Now, keep in mind that this is the time it takes to try all combinations and there’s a good chance that it won’t take the full amount of time specified in the chart to crack your password. Take the below example:

A lock that takes four digits for the combination has 10,000 possible combinations. If it takes a thief one second to enter each combination, it would take nearly 2 hours and 47 minutes to try every combination. But if your password is 0123 and the thief tries all combinations sequentially, it would take just over 2 minutes to get to your combination(9999 would take the longest time).

So what’s the real takeaway from the chart? Stronger passwords are harder to crack.

Some other password tips:

  • Avoid Common Words: Steer clear of easily guessable words like “password,” “admin,” or “123456.” Hackers use common word lists to crack passwords quickly.

  • Use a Unique Password for Each Account: Don’t reuse passwords across different sites. If one account gets compromised, you don’t want the same password granting access to all your other accounts.
  • Avoid Personal Information: Don’t use easily discoverable details like your name, birth date, or pet’s name. Hackers can find this information online.
  • Passphrases: Create memorable phrases by combining unrelated words. For example, “BlueMoonDancesWithStars” is strong and easy to remember.
  • Randomness: Use a password manager to generate random strings. These tools create complex passwords and store them securely.
  • Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Whenever possible, enable 2FA. It adds an extra layer of security beyond your password.
  • Change Regularly: Update your passwords periodically. If a service you use suffers a breach, change your password immediately.
  • Beware of Social Engineering: Be cautious if someone asks for your password via email or phone. Legitimate organizations won’t ask for it directly.
